Pflugerville (the p is silent) is one of those wonderful communities in Central Texas located on the fringes of the Austin Metro area. Pflugerville's citizens are proud of their rich German and Czeck heritage as you can see by all of the wonderful Pfestivals and Pfun that residents and visitors have come to enjoy. Although citizens enjoy their heritage, they don't live in the past. There is an air of excitement and vitality that embraces the progress and technological advances made in the area. Pflugerville is located to the northeast of Austin, away from any major highways. The first parts of the new Texas Toll way System opened in 2006 which included State Highways 130 and 45. The city is planning on using the approximately three miles of 130, including the intersection of these two highways to attract major commercial businesses to the area. The commercial development of undeveloped land for business use should provide a larger tax base and help to lower the tax rate in Pflugerville. Pflugerville has claim to "The Largest Super Target" which just opened. Located in Stone Hill Center, this development is located in the undeveloped area of highway 130 that the City of Pflugerville hopes to attract. Best Buy, Pet-Co and other mega stores are slated to open in Stone Hill Center. Pfluger Crossing opened the first of its stores in 2007 (which includes a super Wal-Mart). Superstores attract smaller shops, restaurants and other businesses that add to the potential growth of an area. In 2005 the City of Pflugerville created Lake Pflugerville which provides a water reservoir for the area and water for approximately the next 30 years.
Pflugerville Independent School District encompasses ninety five square miles, including all or part of six different municipalities. These municipalities include Pflugerville, Hutto, Manor, Austin and Round Rock. With an enrollment of nearly 20,000 students in twenty seven schools, Pflugerville ISD expects to nearly double its growth in the next decade. Students have a choice of more than seven major colleges or universities located around Pflugerville.
While there is always some apprehension about how a city will handle the expansion and development of the area Pflugerville seems to be planning ahead. Zoning approval, bonds for roads and city services, and the opening of Lake Pflugerville are a few investments the city has made towards the growth. Along with high commercial growth usually means more homes, people and traffic. But many residents in an area will tell you that convenience to shopping, employment and schools usually outweighs the inconveniences of traffic or closer neighbors.
Pflugerville is a community that continues to grow. Attracting businesses to the area means more jobs, shopping, dining and entertainment to residents who want to stay closer to home. For other residents who want more than is available in Pflugerville, Austin and Round Rock are close enough to commute for employment or to enjoy some of the more upscale shopping and dining. For others there is Austin's popular nightlife to enjoy.
Pflugerville is a community whose residents have learned to blend a rich heritage with increased growth making Pflugerville a vibrant and economically sound community.
